Interviewing astronaut Buzz Aldrin on THE BUSINESS OF LIFE show yesterday was an opportunity of a lifetime. He is as vibrant and active at age 79 as he must have been as an Apollo astronaut. He told some of the back story of the race into space with the Soviets. Buzz also laid out his vision of how America can continue its scientific lead in space.
The story that stands out in my mind, though, is how he got his name. His given name is Edwin L. Aldrin. He says he had younger sisters who couldn't properly pronounce that he was their brother. They kept calling him their, "buzzer." Later, the nickname was shortened to Buzz, and recently he officially changed his name to Buzz from Edwin.
It was a privilege to have an American icon and true hero on our show.
